Sports Director

Status: Full-Time - Exempt
Salary Range: $38,000-$43,000

Position Summary:  Under the direction of the Senior Program & Facilities Director the Sports Director will lead the development and implementation of high-quality youth and adult sports programs.  This position also oversees scheduling sports activities in the gymnasiums at the Horne Henry Center & Cultural Center, as well as the gym monitor staff in the Horne Henry Center Gymnasium.  The Sports Director will expand and strengthen current programs and find innovative ways to create new programs. Strong organizational and time management skills are necessary to ensure that the participants and families have a high-quality experience at the Y. 

Responsibilities include supervision and training of the program staff and volunteers.  The Sports Director will need to be available to work evenings and weekends, as needed for program activities.

 

List of Job Duties:

  • Manages the youth & adult sports program, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in the program; securing, scheduling and maintaining the needed fields and facilities; creating and scheduling the activities or events; and maintain in coordination with other staff; and/or updating program equipment for games and practices and sports events in the Cultural Center Gymnasium.
  • Manages staff and schedule for the Horne Henry Center Gymnasium.
  • Ensures programs and services meet community needs to include supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Assures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as they relate to program areas, including ADA accommodations where appropriate; ensures that Y program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  • Recruits and hires competent diverse staff and volunteer teams. Onboards and develops them for success. Maintains staff schedules and evaluates staff performance.
  • Creates sports teams; develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials and coaches; develops and distributes rules, guidelines, and handbooks; purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards; coordinates team photographs; organizes and hosts season parties and events; organizes and conducts sports clinics.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions; develops and maintains collaborative relationships with staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintains regular, clear and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  • Organizes or participates in Y activities, such as committees, special events and fundraising.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • One to two years related experience (e.g., supervisor or coordinator of programs) preferred.
  • Have a demonstrated track record of delivering high-quality programs, combined with the ability to manage the associated administrative components. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Completion of Y program-specific training.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
